Civic engagement program sponsored by RISE, a nonprofit organization founded in 2015 by Miami Dolphins owner Stephen M. Ross

Martin Luther King III met with NY Giants players and staff to encourage them to become more politically active and to use their platforms and influence to get others involved in civic engagement.

The event was sponsored by RISE, a nonprofit organization founded in 2015 by Miami Dolphins owner Stephen M. Ross, and is dedicated to harnessing the unifying power of sports to improve race relations and drive social progress.

So, it begs the question, where was Stephen Ross’ voice of reason regarding Colin Kaepernick’s rationale for kneeling during the National Anthem?

Kaepernick’s powerful symbol of activism and resistance is a man that became a movement

GQ magazine selected Colin Kaepernick as its 2017 Citizen of the Year in an effort to help to "reclaim the narrative of his protest”.

Unless you have been hiding under a rock, you know that Kaepernick has become persona non grata in the eyes of people who are angry that Kaepernick would use his position as a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers to shed light on police killings of innocent Black people. Instead of focusing on the real issue of Kaepernick’s protest, which was kneeling during the National Anthem, they would rather conflate his protest with being unpatriotic and a slap in the face to American military veterans. Consequently, these loud voices prevented Kaepernick, who once led the San Francisco 49ers to an NFL Super Bowl, to be unemployed from the NFL during this 2017-18 season.

To Kaepernick’s credit, he would not be silenced and neither will his supporters, particularly when less than mediocre quarterbacks have been hired in a league that supposedly prides itself on winning and hiring great talent. Towards that end, Kaepernick’s legal team filed a federal lawsuit against the NFL claiming the league colluded to not sign him.

Only the Seattle Seahawks and the Baltimore Ravens are reported to have had serious interest in Kaepernick, and in the end, both teams signed lesser talent.

GQ did not receive an on-the-record interview with Kaepernick; instead, Kaepernick pointed GQ to people who are familiar with the subjects of activism, protest, and equality, as well as their ability to offer insights into Colin Kaepernick himself. They included filmmaker Ava DuVernay, rapper J.Cole; activist Harry Belafonte; and Women’s March co-organizer Linda Sarsour.

Rapper J. Cole told GQ:

“You're talking about a guy in his athletic prime, who's lived his whole life dreaming about playing football at a level that millions of kids dream to get to. And in his first big season, he takes his team to within five yards of winning a Super Bowl. But then, at some point in time, he becomes conscious about what's happening in the world.

And suddenly something that he's been doing blindly for his whole life—standing for the national anthem—now feels uncomfortable. Why? Because now it feels phony! It feels like, Man, how can I stand for this thing when this country is not holding itself true to the principles it says it stands for? I feel like we're lying. And look what happens to him. Had he not done that, this guy would be making millions of dollars right now. Period, point blank. And more important than the money, he was living his dream. He sacrificed his dream."

Harry Belafonte, who is no stranger to civil rights protests, expressed to TVOne’s Roland Martin this past summer upon learning that Kaepernick’s unemployment is directly related to his protest:

“to mute the slave is always been to the best interests of the slave owner…“When a black voice is raised in protest to oppression, those who are comfortable with our oppression are the first to criticize us for daring to speak out against it.”

Kaepernick, who is 30-years-old, in 2016, threw for 2,241 yards and 16 touchdowns against four interceptions, should be an NFL quarterback and we hope that he will.

POPPIN'

Colin Kaepernick Files Grievance Against NFL

As we know, former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick filed a grievance against the NFL citing that NFL owners colluded to keep him out of the NFL for kneeling during the National Anthem.

However, some are saying that this case could be bigger than people realized. Various sources seem to think that not only could he end up getting his job back, but he could end up terminating the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement ahead of its scheduled 2021 expiration date:

Article 69, Section 2 of the CBA allows for the agreement to be terminated prematurely in the event of proof of collusion.

Under Article 17, Section 16(c) of the CBA, termination can arise from only one incident of collusion involving only one player if there is clear and convincing evidence of a violation.

Jerry Jones Didn’t Stand for National Anthem

It turns out Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones did not stand for the National Anthem during his first Cowboys game as an owner. Jones sat during the anthem with Liz Taylor, which prompted a fan to write this note:

“JEERS: To Jerry Jones and Liz Taylor, who were the only two people at last Sunday’s Cowboys-Redskins game not standing when the national anthem was played.

Riding out in a cart just before the anthem began was bad enough, but sitting while it was played was more than many of us could handle.

Jerry, please note that in Texas, we stand for the national anthem.

P.S.: Tom [Landry] always took off his hat.”

Lonzo Ball Gives Better Show with Game 2

Lonzo Ball had a terrible regular season NBA debut against the L.A. Clippers, but he redeemed himself in his second regular-season NBA game against the Phoenix Suns.

Ball flirted with a triple-double, scoring 29 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, and dishing out nine assists while drilling four or more 3-pointers in the process.

Shahid “Shan” Khan Goes off on Donald Trump, Again

Speaking to USA Today, Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan doubles down on his recent critique of Donald Trump overall, Trump’s attacks on people of color, and finally the league. Khan said:

“Let’s get real. The attacks on Muslims, the attacks on minorities, the attacks on Jews.

I think the NFL doesn’t even come close to that on the level of being offensive.

Here, it’s about money, or messing with — trying to soil a league or a brand that he’s jealous of.”

Khan goes on to respond to whether or not he regrets contributing to Trump’s inauguration fund.

“I have no regrets in life. This ugly, toxic side sours the whole experience.”

NIKE Connect Jerseys Didn’t Hold Up to Rigors of NBA

Nike is in its first year of a jersey deal with the NBA, and on opening night, arguably their biggest endorser — LeBron James — had his Nike jersey split down the middle of his back.

It might be taken as a fluke if it had only happened to LeBron.

However, in a preseason game, half the back of Lakers’ Tyler Ennis’ jersey had come apart.

New York Knicks on a Losing Skid

Last week, we talked about how most NY Knicks fans were trying to reconcile in their minds that the Knicks are in rebuild mode and nothing says rebuild more when your team has yet to win a game.

Thus far, Kristaps Porzingas is performing well as the leader of the team, but the true measurement of leadership is how well Kristaps will be able to hold up under pressure from game losses.

With three consecutive losses so far, many Knicks fans are expressing their sorrow that Carmelo Anthony is no longer with the team. Anthony currently plays for the Oklahoma City Thunder.
