NBA Draft night on Thursday, which was held at the Barclays Center home of the Brooklyn Nets, was one of the most exciting in the last few years.
Aside from Zion Williamson’s presence and the New York Knicks’ fans being able to cheer and exhale with the selection of RJ Barrett at No. 3, Brooklyn Nets fans were excited as well as you could hear the chants of B-R-O-O-K-L-Y-N from nets fans and the Brooklyn Brigade.
Nets fans were still basking in the glory of making it to the NBA playoffs and for the first time since 2013, not having the ominous cloud of the Boston Celtics hanging over their heads. The Brooklyn Nets were finally able to shake off the 2013 nightmare trade with the Boston Celtics which resulted in the Nets losing their first-round draft picks in 2014, 2016 and 2018, and the right to swap first-rounders in 2017 with the Boston Celtics.
And, with their very owned NBA Draft selection, the Brooklyn Nets selected Nicolas Claxton with the 31st overall pick (second round) of the 2019 NBA Draft on Thursday night. Additionally, the Nets acquired the draft rights to Jaylen Hands, the 56th overall pick, along with a 2020 first round pick from the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for the draft rights to Mfiondu Kabengele, the 27th overall pick in this year’s draft.
Claxton (6’11, 220), comes to Brooklyn after two collegiate seasons at the University of Georgia (2017-19). As a sophomore, the forward/center averaged a team-high 13.0 points, 8.6 rebounds (third in the SEC), 1.1 steals and 2.5 blocks (10th in the nation) while adding 1.8 assists in 31.6 minutes per game on his way to being named to the All-SEC Second Team. The 20-year-old finished his career ranked No. 8 on UGA’s all-time blocks list (123). Claxton has also represented the U.S. Virgin Islands in international competition.
Hands (6’3, 180) spent the past two seasons at UCLA (2017-19). As a sophomore, the guard averaged 14.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, 6.1 assists (first in the Pac-12) and 1.3 steals in 31.2 minutes per contest, earning All-Pac-12 Second Team honors.

The San Diego, California native ended the 2018-19 season tied for eighth in the conference in 3-pointers made (66), shooting at a 37.3 percent (66-of-177) clip.
What's The 411 took part in The Art of Luxury Series, hosted by the expected NBA #1 Draft Pick for 2013, Nerlens Noel and International Model Carissa Rosario. In the ambiance of opulence at the Walt "Clyde" Frazier Wine and Dine, a fun-filled afternoon of luxury items targeted to men was had by all. Exclusively outfitted and geared toward Men, the Art of Luxury Series sets a benchmark as the ONLY annual male-oriented event during NBA DRAFT WEEK highlighting accouterments targeted toward men. Sporting enthusiasts and athletes came out to celebrate in a sea of watches with major bling to a private trainer that can reduce body fat at the speed of light. As I moved from one luxury station to another, I saw a good number of items an NBA ball player would need. The NBA Draft Players need to take heed - a little bling on your wrist or a no-nonsense trainer can take you a long way!
On the Court, that is Clyde Frazier's media room . . . Basketball player Corey "Hurricane" Booker came through and spoke of his "first job" playing in Brazil. He indicated that it's much easier to play throughout the world due to the fact that we are a global society. He also gave a shout out to the Harlem Globetrotters and the "pick-up games" . . . the legacy that remains.
NBA Draft pick, Mason Plumlee, now selected by the Brooklyn Nets, made himself available for photo ops and gave thanks to Duke University's Coach Mike Krzyzewski. Standing next to him, was a daunting moment. He's 7 feet tall.
Actor, Sean Ringgold, of the soap opera One Life to Live hung out with us in the media room. Behind the plexiglass with designs replicating a miniature basketball court, all you can see were cameras flashing and a smile that can be seen for miles. During his interview, he sped off upcoming commercial projects including that One Life to Live is being bought by Oprah's OWN, cable network. That made many fans happy.
And, back to the Bling . . . LaCole Broadus, Personal Trainer, demonstrated various ways to tone and build muscle mass.
"I went from a size 16 to a size 6 in six weeks", said LaCole Broadus.
With an elite clientele from entertainment to government, Ms. Broadus and her husband created Fitness Compulsion six years ago. The amazing duo originates from an extensive background of 20 years in fitness and 10 years in the fashion industry.
"I went from 50 percent body fat to 8 percent body fat when I compete," Ms. Broadus continued.
And, she's a Mom of three children! Who can compete with that?
Jeffrey P. Jacques, representative of the clothing brand Parrish Nation (PN) shared with us the PN line of florals and stars and stripes in tribute to the fourth of July. Parrish Nation originated in 2006 with a graphic tee line. What better way to celebrate the holiday but with a bold and bad t-shirt, dashing with color and design.
Eyevision, started by a team of college students, who are presently entering their sophomore year, is a tee shirt line with a logo of an Egyptian symbol that stands for peace, power, and wealth.
"We've got what people want. We've got a hot design" said one of the team members.
With an aggressive and positive attitude the skies the limit for the young entrepreneurs making it happen.
Trukfit, based on Lil Wayne's brand was in the house.
"It's for those who find inspiration in the street and for people living on the edge. The fun summer fashion line is on display because "Lil Wayne loves basketball," explained Trukfit's volunteer for the day.
This activewear was created to be appealing for skateboarders to basketball players and enthusiasts.
And of course, we must have sweets in support of this masculine ambiance. Sweet Love Company displayed an awesome custom made assortment with the NBA insignia right dab in the center. For the basketball players that dropped by her table, the response was, "I shouldn't do it. It's messing up my diet". But of course, they take a sample. Wink.. wink! As the owner puts it, "they deserve to be sweet loved too".
And last but not least, for the upscale jet-setters, The Secret Lounge was on hand specializing in men's and women's accessories, jewels, furs, costume design, all in an amazing space with a caterer. This Montclair, New Jersey husband and wife team had so much BLING displayed that my eyes blinked twice when entering Clyde Frazier's spot. Wow!!!
The Art and Luxury Series was presented by Tene Nicole Marketing and Public Relations, High Flyers Club, 3P Media, Black Enterprise Magazine and Vodkila.
It was a fun-filled day in anticipation of the 2013 NBA Draft where the Art of Luxury Series took place at NBA Legend and 2x NBA Finals Champion, Walt "Clyde" Frazier's restaurant, Clyde Frazier Wine and Dine, on 485 10th Avenue in midtown-Manhattan. Hosted by the projected No. 1 NBA draft pick, Nerlens Noel, and International Model, Clarissa Rosario, the Art of Luxury Series was presented by Tene Nicole Marketing and Public Relations, High Flyers Club, 3P Media, and Black Enterprise.
Nerlens Noel, the projected No.1 pick in the 2013 NBA Draft
The series began with the annual gifting and grooming suite for males – the only male-oriented grooming suite presented during NBA Draft Week. There were grooming items, jewelry, and other trendy products featured, as well as, Eye Vision Clothing, The Parish Nation clothing line, and Lil Wayne's TRUKFIT clothing line. Draft Pick, Victor Oladipo, and University of Duke star, Mason Plumlee, were on-site browsing the suite.
30 special guests wined and dined in a private section of Clyde Frazier's restaurant. Clyde Frazier attended and told me in an interview that he spoke to Nerlens Noel about the upcoming draft. Frazier quoted that "he likes Noel's talents and hopes he does well." He continued with advice for those entering the league "to set a plan, remember those (family, coaches, etc.) who helped get them to where they are today, work on time-management, and have confidence and a tenacious work ethic."
Clyde Frazier was thrilled to have the "Art of Luxury Series" held at his restaurant. He shared that he is amazed to see how much the NBA game has evolved, particularly with how much more the younger players are physically equipped as they enter the draft at age 19 in comparison to his 1st round NBA draft pick almost 50 years ago at age 22.
The five-star, four-course seated dinner was a great chance for former and current professional athletes, and supportive sponsors to interact with one another and exchange valuable information. Notable figures were in attendance including Former NBA Champion, Craig "Speedy" Claxton and his wife, Meeka, along with actor Sean Ringgold.

The series ended with a red carpet and up-beat Philanthropy Mix and Mingle. The lively event benefited the nonprofit organization, Beating Cancer in Heels. Founder, Marlena Ortiz, age 28, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 25, created the nonprofit to empower young women who are fighting cancer.
Marlena noted that everyone is always fighting for a goal in some type of element. She added, just like those entering the NBA Draft, they have been fighting to get to this level and will continue to fight to have successful careers. Through her organization, Marlena espouses a similar message. She encourages young women battling cancer to keep pushing and to live their lives to the fullest.
International Model, Clarissa Rosario; VH1's Love & Hip Hop star, Yandy Smith and VH1's Mobwives star, Love Majewski, were among the many VIP guests celebrating at the Red Carpet Philanthropy Mix and Mingle to bring Tene Nicole's NBA Pre-Draft Art of Luxury Series to a close.

Congratulations and best of luck to the 2013 NBA Draft class.
It’s NBA Draft night and the excitement among NBA fans in the arena at the Barclays Center, as well as reporters in the Brooklyn Nets press room is quite apparent. For the last several years, Brooklyn Nets’ fans have been sidelined during the early rounds of the draft because of a trade with the Boston Celtics in 2013 that brought Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Jason Terry to Brooklyn. If it were not for some fancy maneuvering every year on the part of Nets’ management, Brooklyn wouldn’t have a pick at all until 2019, as its picks were part of the deal with Boston.
With the Nets first pick of the night at No. 29, general manager Sean Marks selected Dzanan Musa from Bosnia, who plays for Cedevita of the Croatian League. We don’t generally get news about European players, but Musa happens to be ranked No. 18 in ESPN’s Top 100. Musa, who is 19-years-old, has lived on his own since he was 11-years-old and moved to Croatia to join KK Cedevita at age 15. It's not that many people in the world with that type of initiative.
Next up at No. 40, the Nets selected 20-year-old Rodions Kurucs from Latvia. Marks personally scouted Kurucs while he played with his Spanish league team.
At No. 45, the Nets selected Hamidou Diallo and promptly traded his rights to the Charlotte Hornets.
In this episode of What’s The 411Sports, Keisha Wilson and Mike McDonald, co-hosts of What’s The 411Sports are talking about: Kevin Hart, Sports Illustrated, Colin Kaepernick, Stan Van Gundy, Carmelo Anthony, Odell Beckham Jr., Dwyane Wade, and Rick Pitino.
Our Photo of the Week is a photo of Los Angeles Lakers' players standing arm-in-arm in unity.
Detroit Pistons head coach Stan Van Gundy dislikes tanking in the NBA so much that he is advocating getting rid of the NBA Draft to eliminate the problem.
Van Gundy doesn’t believe the NBA went far enough with its draft lottery revisions.
Van Gundy indicated that if the league truly wants to eliminate tanking, it should abolish the draft, do away with the rookie salary scale and make all incoming players free agents.
"I'd get rid of it, just get rid of the draft altogether," Van Gundy said. "We'd just deal with the salary cap. Make all [rookies] free agents coming in, and if I want to go give a guy $50 million a year, good, but I got to do it under the cap."
Do you think Stan is on to something or, is this the most ridiculous idea yet?

NBA Draft night 2017 is over and the picks are in. Listen in on the Brooklyn Nets press conference as the team introduces its NBA Draft pick, Jarrett Allen.
The Brooklyn Nets selected Jarrett Allen from the University of Texas at Austin in the first round at No. 22, and on the very next day, June 23, 2017, the Nets held a press conference to introduce its draft selection to the New York media.
Sean Marks, Brooklyn Nets general manager, and Brooklyn Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson agreed after the NBA Draft that the Nets will need time to develop Allen.
Even Allen is clear that he is a work in progress, particularly the need to strengthen his body. In addition to developmental work, Allen admitted that he needs to adjust to New York City since he comes from a more suburban environment.
The Brooklyn Nets is a very young team, and Sean and Kenny will look to Jeremy Lin, Trevor Booker, Sean Kilpatrick, and even recent pickup Timofey Mozgov to provide leadership to the younger players both on and off the court.
Leading into the draft, speculators had Allen floating in the first round around 12-16, even Sean Marks was surprised that Allen was still available at No. 22. Scouting reports listed Jarrett Allen’s attributes as a good defender, a remarkable 7’5” wingspan to go along with a wide frame, and quick feet and surprising agility.
Sean Marks, Brooklyn Nets, General Manager, started his conversation with reporters that cover the Brooklyn Nets with praises for Brook Lopez for his 9-season commitment to the Brooklyn Nets. Lopez should be proud that the Nets front office thought enough of him to preface their player movement briefing by thanking him for his hard work and dedication to the Brooklyn Nets. Many organizations neglect to publicly thank former employees for being an asset to the organization, they just move on as if you never existed.
After thanking Lopez, Marks pivoted and answered questions from reporters regarding the Lopez trade for Los Angeles Lakers players D'Angelo Russell and Timofey Mozgov, and the Nets’ NBA Draft night pick Jarrett Allen.
The Nets selected Allen in the first round at No. 22. Brooklyn's second draft pick in the first round at No. 27, Kyle Zuma, went to the Lakers to complete the Russell- Mozgov trade.
Now, in case you’re wondering how the Nets could have draft picks if the Nets gave away its draft picks to the Boston Celtics through the 2018 season, here’s the answer. The Washington Wizards needed depth and the Nets needed draft picks, so the Nets and the Wizards did a deal. The Wizards traded forward Andrew Nicholson, guard-forward Marcus Thornton, and a 2017 first-round lottery protected pick (#22) to the Nets for shooting guard Bojan Bogdanovic and forward Chris McCullough.
The Nets also had Boston’s first-round pick (Boston has Brooklyn’s), which gave the Nets a second first round pick at No. 27.
File this one under heartbreaking.
I heard this story about Isaiah Austin's fate while listening to ESPN's Mike and Mike this morning.
Austin was making preparations for this year's NBA Draft, which is only three days away.
He was all set to light up the NBA despite his partial blindness.
However, Austin's trip to the NBA, as a player is not in the cards. A pre-Draft physical uncovered a rare genetic disorder that affects his heart.
The former Baylor University center, who left school early to enter this week's NBA draft, has been diagnosed with Marfan syndrome, which affects the body's connective tissue.
Features of the disorder are most often found in the heart, blood vessels, bones, joints, and eyes.
Some Marfan features – for example, aortic enlargement (expansion of the main blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart to the rest of the body) – can be life-threatening.
Miracles can happen and we hope that a miracle or scientific breakthrough will happen so that Mr. Austin can fulfill his lifelong dream.
The calm before the storm settled in at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY Thursday night as the NBA draft prospects sat with their families and mingled with reporters, teammates and agents. The draft picks groomed to a "T" and dressed in their Sunday's best, awaited David Stern to mark the podium for the first announcement. The "Green Room," designated for the draft prospects and their guests only looked like a first-grade class-- all attendees with their chins up, heads forward, hands on the table and all eyes on the teacher (Stern.) Nerlens Noel and Alex Len, two of the top prospects thought to be most likely to go 1 and 2, looked attentively, listening to Stern's announcement.
Boos belted out from the crowd, as Stern took the stage.
"With the 1st pick of the NBA 2013 draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers select (PAUSE) Anthony Bennett of Toronto Canada."
The crowd shocked, exploding with semi-excitement for the guy who sports analysts projected to go 4th or 5th.
Bennett, the 6-foot-8 forward and his family jumped to their feet.
The 20-year-old, who started playing basketball seven years ago told reporters that he was "just surprised as everybody else" for being picked No. 1.
"I didn't really have any idea who's going No. 1 or who was going No. 2. I heard everything was up for grabs. But I'm just real happy, glad that I have this opportunity, and I just got to thank God for the opportunity," he said.
After only one year at UNLV, Bennett becomes the second player at the university to be selected the top overall pick, joining Larry Johnson, who was drafted in 1991.
Bennett also becomes the first Canadian to get drafted as a No. 1 pick.
Too much surprise, Noel wasn't called No. 2, but Victor Oladipo is a guy Orlando fans are sure to fall in love with. Besides feeling delighted for being the second pick of the draft, the former Indiana guard said he's not sure if his family still knows "what's going on."
The Nigerian player also has a great singing voice, maybe he'll sing the National Anthem at one of the games.
After five picks in Thursday night's NBA draft, Nerlens finally heard his name called when the New Orleans Pelicans selected him with the sixth pick. He barely showed excitement, likely disappointed that five other picks were selected before him.
"I'm excited getting started with Anthony," Noel said after hearing his name called.
His stint with the Pelicans only lasted for about 30 minutes, after reports swirled that he'd been traded to the Philadelphia 76ers for Jrue Holiday and the NBA's 42nd pick.
Other fan favorites like Trey Burke, Otto Porter Jr, Cody Zeller and Michael-Carter Williams also nabbed NBA picks.
Basketball junkies at Barclays consisted of mostly Brooklyn Nets and New York Knicks fans, with Knicks guru Spike Lee in the audience. While the Nets selected Mason Plumlee of Duke, other fans seemed enthusiastic as the Knicks drafted Tim Hardaway Jr. (Not sure about how Tim Hardaway Sr. feels about the pick, knowing the former NBA player hates the Knicks, but I'm sure he's happy for his son nonetheless.)
On social media, the Nets seemed to have been the talk of the night, with rumors swirling that Kevin Garnett waived his no-trade clause, making room for the Boston Big Three trade that could send him, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry to the Brooklyn Nets for the package of players and draft picks.
See a complete list of the NBA drafts picks below.
